Keep Forsyth County Beautiful has won a $2,000 grant to establish a community orchard. The grant from Keep Georgia Beautiful clears the way for planting of the project during a fall landscape workshop Nov. 15 at Chattahoochee Point Park, 5790 Chattahoochee Point Drive in south Forsyth County.

The project is designed both for environmental benefit and as a source of free, local food. The Georgia Urban Forest Council and the Georgia Forestry Commission will provide technical and planning assistance to grant recipients across the state.

The orchard will consist of persimmon, pawpaw, crabapple, serviceberry and other species.

The project has planed more than 180 trees in a half-dozen communities since its 2012 inception.
