A car crash early Saturday morning on Lower Roswell Road in Marietta left the driver dead, and sent the front seat passenger to the hospital, according to Cobb County police.

Police identified the driver as 62-year-old Roosevelt Schimmel, of Marietta.

According to investigators, Schimmel was westbound on Lower Roswell Road near Surrey Trail at 1:20 a.m. While negotiating a right curve, Schimmel, who was driving a BMW convertible, lost control of the vehicle and left the roadway, striking a mailbox. The car continued down the sloped shoulder of the roadway and started to flip, then came to a final rest against a utility pole.

Schimmel was pronounced dead at the scene. Alcohol and speed are believed to have contributed to the crash, according to police.

The passenger, Michele Pierce, 34, of Smyrna, was entrapped in the vehicle and was extricated by the Cobb County Fire Department. She was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital and treated for minor injuries. The crash is under investigation. Anyone with information that could help investigators is asked to call (770) 499-3987.
