Fire crews fought a blaze Tuesday morning at a vacant apartment building in southwest Atlanta, five months after a “suspicious” fire caused damaged to the same complex.

When they arrived at the building in the 1900 block of Alison Court, heavy smoke and fire could already be seen, Atlanta Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Matt Driver told AJC.com.

Firefighters got the blaze under control quickly, Driver said. No one was inside at the time.

“The property has been vacant for several years now,” Driver said.

The blaze comes months after Atlanta authorities opened an investigation into a fire at the vacant complex.

The fire department received that call Dec. 18, spokesman Sgt. Cortez Stafford said. At first, a caller reported two individual apartment units were on fire, but when crews arrived they found that multiple units were ablaze in two different buildings.

“It is uncommon that two separate buildings catch on fire at the same time, so this fire is suspicious,” Stafford said.

Stafford said it took fire crews nearly an hour to get the flames under control at the first building. The fire in the second building was harder to extinguish because the flames spread to the attic, he said.

No injuries were reported in the December fire. It is not clear if the recent fire is considered suspicious.
