Drafts of two revised voting districts in Fayette County will be prepared for an initial public review by Nov. 9. The Board of Commissioners held a public hearing at its Oct. 14 meeting, although there was no public comment or discussion among board members.

Attorney Bryan Tyson said the 2020 U.S. Census showed that the populations of Districts 2 and 4 fall outside the “accepted ranges of deviation” of +/- 5% of the desired district size of 29,799 residents. District 2 has 4.91% more people and District 4 has 5.96% fewer, which will require redrawing the boundaries of both. District 4 falls under the U.S. Voting Rights Act for protecting minority representation.

County residents can see and comment on the proposed district map at the board’s Nov. 9 meeting, which will be held at 2 p.m. at 140 Stonewall Ave. West. Any further changes to the map must be made by Dec. 9 so the local legislative delegation can present it to the General Assembly for finalizing during the January session.
