This fall, new television shows focused on genealogy and DNA are being added to the lineup. Some have already started.
One of the new shows is “The DNA of Murder with Paul Holes,” which premieres October 12 at 8 p.m. on the Oxygen channel. This relates to DNA and unsolved homicides. Ancestry.com is sponsoring a new program called “A New Leaf,” which will appear on NBC on Saturday mornings as part of “The More You Know” program. Check local listings for show times. This program will follow people as they discover their family history and will dip into all areas of research, including DNA.
Henry Louis Gates Jr.’s sixth season of “Finding Your Roots” on PBS will have two new episodes this fall and eight more in January 2020. The new people featured include Melissa McCarthy, Jordan Peele, Isabella Rossellini, Gayle King, Terry Gross, Queen Latifah and many more. Always check your television schedule and cable provider. Gates’ program will appear on GPB and PBA Atlanta.
Friends of Georgia Archives annual meeting
The Friends of Georgia Archives and History will hold its annual meeting on October 26 from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at the Georgia Archives in Morrow. There will be a business meeting discussing FOGAH’s activities over the past year and the reveal of the 2019 Christmas ornament, featuring an interior view of the State Capitol. Ornament sales are the main fundraiser for FOGAH. The annual meeting’s featured speaker will be Hannah Palmer on her new book “Flight Path: A Search for Roots Beneath the World’s Busiest Airport.” For more on her, see hannahspalmer.com/flightpath. Prohibition in Atlanta topic of DeKalb History Center event
"Prohibition in Atlanta: Temperance, Tiger Kings & White Lightning," by authors Ron Smith and Mary O. Boyle, will be the topic of the DeKalb History Center's Hops at the History Center on October 23 at 6 p.m. at the Old Courthouse on the Square in Decatur. The cost is $5 members, $10 nonmembers.
