Christmas may be over, but the gifts will soon be going out to a batallion of lucky Marines in Iraq. If some Roswell-ian elves have anything to say about it, that is.

The city of Roswell, along with the Rotary Club and Visitors Center in that north Fulton community, on Thursday sent out a wish list of items to be collected for the troops. The drive, which runs through January 29th, asks people to make the smallest of sacrifices for those who regularly make much bigger ones:

"Since the troops do so much for our country, Roswell would like to start the new year off with a project to support them," the elves said (actually, the combined organizations sent out an official release). "For the next couple of weeks, add a few inexpensive items to your grocery list and drop them off at the visitors center."

Among the desired items, which will go out to the 1st Batallion 7th Marines, 1st Division in Iraq, are energy bars, gum, Propel Powder or similar mixes, Starbucks instant coffee packets, socks, lip balm, hand held games (no batteries can be shipped) and more. Topping the entire list is beef jerky.

Beef jerky?

“By special request,” the elves wrote, providing what we can only imagine is a direct quote from a soldier by way of explanation:

“It tastes like home.”

The visitors center is located at 617 Atlanta Street in historic downtown Roswell. For more information, call 770-640-3253.
