Georgia Women of Achievement, the state’s hall of fame for women, founded in 1992, is seeking nominations for its 2016 induction ceremony.

Basic criteria for a nomination are that the woman must have done her primary work in her field in Georgia, have been deceased for at least 10 years, and be significant at the regional or state level, not just locally.

In past years, 83 Georgia women have been included, and a list of them can be seen along with a video for many of them at georgiawomen.org.

The nomination form can be downloaded from that website. Further information about the organization and the nomination process also are there.

For more information, contact boardofselections@gmail.com. The Board of Selections is a group of scholars who review the applications to decide on the new inductees.

The 2016 induction ceremony will be held in March at Wesleyan College in Macon.

Cemetery safety

Recently, I heard of a family visiting a local cemetery on Father’s Day to lay flowers. While at the gravesite, no more than 5 minutes away, their locked car was broken into, and a purse hidden under the seat was stolen. The thieves are suspected of watching the family and noting that one woman didn’t carry a purse, leading them to assume it was in the car.

The message in this is to be careful at smaller cemeteries, especially on special commemorative days when thieves might await unsuspecting visitors. You must always be vigilant, even while honoring your ancestors.

Ancestry videos

Ancestry.com is launching its "Ancestry Academy" educational videos. The videos about how to use any of their products, including Ancestry DNA, Fold3 and Newspapers.com, are free, but there is a charge, either monthly ($11.99) or yearly ($99), to view the others, unless you are a World Explorer Plus member.

Current pay-per-view videos cover French Canadian roots, homesteads, using manuscripts, and lots more. Others will be added monthly.

While these videos compete with the many webinars that are being offered by other organizations, it never hurts to learn as much as you can on a subject, by whatever means. To find the videos, go to the Ancestry site and look under Learning Center.
