LAWRENCEVILLE
“Hot Diggity Doug” at Aurora Theatre
Ace storyteller Barry Stewart Mann circles back around for an appearance at Aurora’s Children’s Playhouse series. His latest program, “Hot Diggity Doug,” centers on the adventures of the do-gooder Doug and his dog Digger. Kids will have the opportunity to interact and participate in the show, which leans heavily on wordplay. Sure, Mann is known to wear funny hats, use puppets and indulge in the kind of goofiness tots love. Yet, mom and dad can appreciate that the guy has a degree from Harvard and a master’s in theater from the University of San Diego. Aurora’s kiddie series continues on Aug. 31 with “Freeze Frame” by Big Thinkers Science Exploration.
10 a.m. Aug. 24. $7. Aurora Theatre. Free parking at 153 Crogan St., Lawrenceville. 678-226-6222, www.auroratheatre.com.
MARIETTA
Heather Luttrell at Darwin’s Burgers and Blues
That this tattooed, auburn-haired singer-songwriter is still playing small clubs may be one of life’s true musical injustices. Yet, it’s our gain. The intimate grill and watering hole may be one of the best spots to see Luttrell’s mad skills. Since she’s taking the stage at Darwin’s, maybe she’ll play “He’ll Do Till He Quits Doin’.” The bluesy track comes from her most recent platter, “Possumdiva.” Musicians can swing by earlier in the day for the weekly Saturday afternoon open mic hosted by Katie Martin, which takes place from 1 to 5 p.m. All are invited to jam. Just bring the gear.
9:30 p.m. Aug. 24. $10. Darwin’s Burgers and Blues, 1598 Roswell Road, Marietta. 770-509-2664, www.darwinsburgers.com.
DULUTH
Over the Rhine at Eddie Owen Presents at Red Clay Theatre
Karin Bergquist and Linford Detweiler, the lifeblood of the critically praised Over the Rhine, will be celebrating their band’s upcoming double album with this special gig. Although double albums may have been staples of the 1970s, don’t expect “Frampton Comes Alive.” Instead Over the Rhine’s effort drips in contemporary folk. Although they’ve been playing longer than most Mumford & Sons fans have been wearing skinny jeans and mustaches, that crowd should appreciate Over the Rhine too.
8 p.m. Aug. 24. $25 advance; $27 at the door. Red Clay Theatre, 3116 Main St., Duluth. 404-478-2749, www.eddieowenpresents.com.
