Whole Foods is recalling more than 70,000 pounds of frozen pepperoni pizza products, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced on Monday.
The frozen pizzas are being recalled due to mislabeling on the products' packaging. Incorrect labels indicate that the pizza products contain uncured beef pepperoni, but the pizza actually contains uncured pork pepperoni. The USDA said the mistake was discovered during a label review at Whole Foods and the mixup may have occurred as a result of a change in ingredient suppliers.
Recalled items include 8" (10-oz) and 12" (19-oz) frozen pepperoni pizzas that were shipped to Whole Foods stores in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Rhode Island.
Items subject to recall include products produced between Jan. 5, 2015 and Jan. 22, 2016 and have sell-by dates between Jan. 12, 2015 and Jan. 30, 2016. Consumers should note that the affected products were produced over the span of nearly a year.
There have been no reports of negative reactions or illness to the products.
Customers who have purchased a recalled Whole Foods pepperoni pizza should either throw away the pizza or return it to the store of purchase.
