Silver Airways launched five new routes from Atlanta on Monday, taking over flights previously served by Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines.
Silver began flights from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport to Greenville, Tupelo, Hattiesburg-Laurel and Meridian in Mississippi and to Muscle Shoals, Ala., adding on to routes it launched in August from Hartsfield-Jackson to Lewisburg/Greenbrier, W.Va. and Gainesville, Fla.
The small carrier is serving the new Atlanta routes under the federal Essential Air Service program, which pays subsidies to airlines to fly to communities that otherwise might not have air service.
Delta announced last year it would cut service to small cities it served under the Essential Air Service program, saying it had been losing about $14 million annually serving 24 small markets.
Silver was formed last year with assets from the former Gulfstream International Airlines, which filed for bankruptcy protection in 2010.
