The approach of Hurricane Michael has prompted the cancellation of state regulatory meetings this week including those related to Florida Power & Light Co. and customers in Vero Beach, officials said Monday.

These have been rescheduled for later in the month, the Florida Public Service Commission said.

PSC officials made the decision based on Michael’s expected landfall in the Big Bend area on Wednesday.

A hearing on Juno Beach-based FPL’s request to charge new rates to former City of Vero Beach customers and for approval of FPL’s proposed accounting treatment for the purchase of the Vero Beach electric utility has been changed to 9 a.m. on Oct. 18.

Public comment and testimony will be taken at 2:00 p.m. on Oct. 18. The meeting will continue the next day as needed, officials said.

Regulators approved in June a plan nearly a decade in the making for FPL to purchase the City of Vero Beach’s electric utility.

“We are thrilled to reach the final step in a very long process, and we look forward to welcoming 35,000 new customers into the FPL family this fall,” FPL president Eric Silagy said then.

FPL said its rates are about 20 percent lower than those of the municipal utility and its customers should experience “significant savings.”
