Suzanne Sitherwood, president of Atlanta Gas Light and immediate past chairwoman of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, has accepted the job of president of the Laclede Group, the St. Louis-based utility is reporting.

Sitherwood will be Laclede Group's president starting Sept. 1 and then become its chairman and CEO starting Jan. 31, according to a new release on Laclede's Web site.

She replaces Douglas Yaeger, who told Laclede earlier this year he wants to retire in early 2012, the release said.

A spokeswoman for Atlanta Gas Light told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Tuesday night that the company had no comment and would release a statement Wednesday morning.

She started working for AGL more than 25 years ago as a co-op student. She rose through the company, serving as its vice president of gas operations and capacity planning at its parent, AGL Resources.

Atlanta Gas Light builds, operates and maintains the pipes that deliver gas from retail marketers. Part of AGL Resources, which has gas utilities in six states, the company has more than 1.5 million residential and commercial customers in Georgia. Its parent company, AGL Resources, is buying Naperville, Ill.-based Nicor Inc. for $2.4 billion

The PSC approved a a $26 million rate hike for AGL last October.

Sitherwood is on the Governor's Energy Policy Council, as well as a number of advisory boards for nonprofit organizations, including the Carter Center and the Atlanta New Century School.

She has a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering technology from Southern College of Technology and has a master's degree in business administration from Brenau University.
