A former Verizon Communications executive is joining the board of directors at Suwanee-based ARRIS Group Inc., a broadband cable equipment supplier.

Doreen Toben was executive vice president at Verizon before retiring in June 2009. She was chief frinancial officer from April 2002 until February 2009 and is a former senior vice president and chief financial officer for Verizon’s Telecom Group. She began her communications career at AT&T.

Toben also serves on the boards of Fifth & Pacific Cos., formerly Liz Claiborne Inc., and The New York Times Co.

On Friday, ARRIS announced it had laid off 500 workers across its national and international operations following its recent $2.35 billion purchase of Motorola Mobility's home business from Google/
