A Georgia church is capitalizing on the popularity of the "cash me outside" girl who has been trending again in social media.
Britt David Baptist Church in Columbus gained worldwide internet fame after using a play on words to attract parishioners.
For those who may not know what this is all about, let's back up to Sept. 2016 when 13-year-old Danielle Bregoli and her mom appeared on an episode of the Dr. Phil show.
Bregoli blasted the audience and her mom with her tough talk most eloquently captured in the phrase, "Cash me outside, how bow dah?"
More than 90 million people have viewed the episode and associated content on You Tube as Dr. Phil attempted to counsel the duo (WARNING: Explicit Language):
Naturally, after Bregoli's appearance, her catchphrase, an invitation to fight in Bregoli's version of street talk, made the rounds of social media.
Next thing you know, there was a trap remix, a dance challenge, and yes, a church sign. Bregoli has picked up millions of followers on her own social media accounts and she reportedly has a line of t-shirts and other apparel featuring her most memorable comments from the show.
This week, she made headlines again when she, her mom and another passenger were removed from a Spirit Airline flight for fighting. The three were reportedly banned from the airlines. Bregoli and her mom were said to have been traveling to film a follow-up episode of Dr. Phil. According to the show's website, the episode airs Friday, Feb. 10.
Now back to Georgia. The church decided to use the phrase on its sign to attract a younger crowd.
Pastor Tim Jones told the Ledger-Enquirer that the phrase was familiar to younger church members, but not the older ones.
His son, Alex Jones, a student at Columbus State University, came up with the play on Bregoli's words.
"Cash God Inside. Howbow Dah?" was designed to be inspirational and entertaining, but they were surprised when the sign went viral.
“I had no idea something like this would happen,” said Alex Jones to the Ledger-Enquirer. But the attention, they said, is proof that millennials are paying attention.
While they will eventually change the sign (if they haven't already), it is still making the rounds online thanks to Bregoli's latest activities.
