Newt Gingrich's town hall for Donald Trump is about to start here at Kennesaw State University, but Gingrich gave us a few minutes beforehand to ask a couple questions.
The former U.S. House speaker said his address today will be all about "deplorables and dishonesty."
"I'm going to walk through the words (Hillary Clinton) uses and what it means and why she had to use them," Gingrich said. "This is sort of the last stand of the old left. They can no longer win arguments and they can no longer tell the truth and so they get down to screaming words that they hope will keep us quiet."
"Deplorables," of course, is a reference to Clinton's remarks last week that "you can put half of Trump supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. Right? Racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic, you name it."
On Clinton's weekend health scare -- she had to leave a 9/11 ceremony early on Sunday and her campaign later said she had been diagnosed with pneumonia two days earlier -- Gingrich said Clinton did not handle the situation well.
"All of us ... and I've known Hillary for 24 years," Gingrich said. "All of us should have her in our prayers and hope she gets well. But when you're in a national event for 9/11 and you can't last through the event, it's troublesome."
Gingrich said if Clinton manages to handle three 90-minute debates -- he called them "very grueling" -- "that will solve a lot of the problems. She's had enough little things that they're going to have to do something to convince people she's OK."
Putting his political strategist's hat on, Gingrich said Clinton would have been better off announcing pneumonia diagnosis on Friday and declare her intention to still attend the 9/11 service.
"Then people would have had respect for her," he said. "They would have understood if she sat, for example, because she has pneumonia. One of her problems is she perennially have to pretend things that are not true. you see that with the multiple answers about emails."
