The turbulence at the state Capitol could get slightly rough today.

State Sen. Michael Williams, a Republican candidate for governor from Forsyth County, has advertised a 2 p.m. press conference/rally. (Supporters have been invited as well as journalists.)

Here’s the gist from the press release:

State Senator and Republican candidate for Governor, Michael Williams, will make a statement regarding previously undisclosed actions of Lt. Governor Casey Cagle. The actions and corroborating details will be presented at the press conference.

Last month, at the state GOP convention in Augusta, Williams publicly declared that he had been offered the chairmanship of the Senate Appropriations Committee, if only he would withdraw from the race for governor. At the time, he refused to say who had made the offer.

Williams' approach is more than unusual. The common practice is for surrogates to fling the mud, in case of back-splashing.

You can expect a pretty quick reply on Thursday. Cagle’s office is on the second floor of the Capitol, just a hundred yards or so from where Williams will be saying his piece.
