Georgia Democrats took to the national stage Friday to bash presumptive Donald Trump, using a press call arranged by the Democratic National Committee to call the GOP presidential nominee "erratic," "dangerous" and "unfit" to lead the nation on military and veterans’ issues.
The call, which featured Georgia House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams, Vietnam War veteran and Purple Heart recipient Sen. Ed Harbison, D-Columbus and Vietnam Veteran Mike Rasbury, came as Democrats nationally have made hay over questions about Trump’s fundraising for veterans causes.
It also follows reports of an Iraq war veteran claiming she was fired by Trump University because she needed two days a month off in order to serve in the Army Reserve. The claim came in a deposition unsealed this week as part of a federal class action lawsuit accusing the school of fraud.
A spokeswoman for the Trump Organization has called the claim "completely meritless."
The sum of the 23-minute call? “Donald Trump is a fraud,” said Rasbury, who also took the national Republican Party to task over its treatment of Democratic lawmakers.
Rasbury then ticked off a list that included the "Swift boating" of Secretary of State John Kerry, Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Tammy Duckworth of Illinois and Georgia's own Max Cleland, who lost his U.S. Senate seat in 2002 to Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss during a heated campaign in which the Vietnam veteran and triple-amputee accused Chambliss of questioning his patriotism.
Abrams, who along with Harbison has endorsed Democratic presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton, also made sure to note that Georgia House Democrats made veterans’ issues part of their platform over the past two years, holding listening sessions throughout the state on how to support military families and those who served.
Trump, meanwhile, has angrily defended himself against the accusations, saying the news media was unfairly questioning him over charitable acts that he said included $5.6 million in donations to veterans.
