If you didn’t file a federal return for 2011 you still have a chance to collect a refund for that year IF you file the return no later than April 15. Of course, that’s also the deadline for filling your 2014 tax return.

Refunds become Uncle Sam’s to keep if they aren’t claimed within three years.

The median refund for Georgians for the 2011 federal tax year is $628. Taxpayers nationally left about $1 billion on the table by not filing their 2011 federal tax return.

Internal Revenue Service spokesman Mark Green suggests you go back and review your 2011 statements for refundable credits and withholdings.

The good news is no penalty for filing a late return that qualifies for a refund, Green said.
