Michael Parkhurst will be Atlanta United’s captain for a second season.

The 34-year-old defender will start his ninth season in MLS. He previously played for New England (2005-08) and Columbus (2014-16). Atlanta United finished with 55 points and clinched the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference. Parkhurst appeared in 33 games and was selected to the MLS All-Star team.

“It’s a great honor,” he said. “I take a lot of pride in being one of the leaders on the team. If I have the arm band, it doesn’t mean that there aren’t other leaders on this team, because there are.

“It takes a group effort to lead the team in the right direction and do things the right way. Collectively, we have to be strong. There’s no doubt I want to be a guy that the team can lean on in tough times, both on the field and off the field. That’s the goal: To be there to help my teammates and be a good role model on and off the field.”
