Former Georgia Tech administrator Paul Griffin will serve as the athletic department’s interim athletic director while the school conducts its search for a replacement for Mike Bobinski.

Griffin was named to the position Thursday, when school president G.P. “Bud” Peterson met with athletic department staff to give a briefing on the transition. Peterson has also assembled a search committee, which will be headed by Georgia Tech Foundation president Al Trujillo, an institute graduate.

Griffin will begin Aug. 29, Peterson said. That week will conclude with the Tech football team’s game in Dublin against Boston College. Griffin had served as a senior associate AD for 11 years at Tech previously, first to Dave Braine and then to Dan Radakovich.

“He’s been the interim before, he knows Georgia Tech, he’s a seasoned veteran,” Peterson told the AJC. “There’s some things I want him to continue to move forward on. … I think he did a great job last time and I’m just really, really pleased that he’s willing to come in and do this again for us.”

Also serving on the committee:

Jen Abrams – student, former member of the Georgia Tech Athletic Association (GTAA) board and former student government association president

Mary Brock – member of Alexander-Tharpe Fund board, co-chair of Tech’s recently concluded capital campaign, co-owner of the Atlanta Dream

Reginald Desroches –civil engineering department chair and the faculty athletic representative

Lynn Durham –assistant vice president and chief of Peterson’s staff

Mac Nease – alumni member of the Tech athletic association, former Tech baseball player, president of Nease, Lagana, Eden and Culley, Inc.

Nathan Rakitt – Tech student, former member of the tennis team and chair of the student athlete advisory board

Steve Swant – executive vice president for administration and finance

Peterson said he is considering adding a ninth member to the committee but hadn’t been able to reach that person. Peterson said he told Griffin that he is hopeful that a new AD can be hired and installed in four months.
