Rubio, who earned his graduate degree at Florida, said of the rivalry with Florida State, “Look, I don’t have anything against Florida State. I think there has to be a school where people that can’t get into Florida can go to college.”

John Thrasher, Florida State University's president, couldn't help but sound off on Rubio's comments. Thrasher said during an interview that Rubio is a "nice kid" who's probably frustrated by his low poll ranking, which may be due to his education.

Rubio staffers who are Florida State fans also gave their boss a good-natured rebuttal.

After the interview went viral, Rubio took to Twitter to try to save face with Seminole fans, saying it was just good-natured trash talk, not a “Meet the Press” interview.
