Several people suffered injuries and one person died Tuesday morning when a passenger train collided with a hydraulic crane in the Netherlands.
The crash happened at about 9 a.m. in the Netherlands.
Photographs from the scene posted on social media and by Dutch news organizations showed the train sprawled nearly horizontally over tracks outside the town of Dalfsen.
The town's mayor, Han Noten, confirmed one person died in the crash. He said about 15 people were on board the Arriva train at the time of the collision, according to the Evening Standard.
Six people were injured, one seriously, in the crash, according to BBC News.
"Luckily it wasn't the busiest train, so as regards casualties it won't be as bad as it could have been," Noten told the news station.
Authorities were investigating the cause of the accident. Eyewitnesses said the crane waited for a train to pass and then attempted to cross as a train came from the other direction, The Telegraph reported.
The crane operator managed to jump clear of danger and was being interviewed by police, according to BBC News.
A spokesman said: “We can confirm that this morning at around 9am an Arriva train in the Netherlands has been involved in an accident near the town of Dalfsen.
"Our first concern is for our staff and passengers and we are cooperating fully with the investigation which has been launched by the Dutch Safety Board," a spokesman for train operator Arriva told the Evening Standard. "We will provide further information as soon as it is available.”
Reports indicated the train's conductor may have been among those dead. Authorities did not immediately confirm the identification.
