Fans heading to watch Beyonce and Jay Z go “On the Run” at the Georgia Dome, take note: Things have changed.
The Tuesday concert, a sell-out of 50,000-plus, is the first major event to take place at the venue since construction started on the New Atlanta Stadium. About 1,300 parking spaces have been lost to construction (goodbye orange, purple, brown and silver lots). Georgia Dome Drive, the access road to the red lot, has been closed, so visitors must loop around (follow the signs) to gain entry to the red lot.
“I don’t know if people realize that construction of the (new) stadium is literally 10 feet from the Georgia Dome in some areas. Even if you came to a Falcons game last year, things are completely different,” said Jason Kirksey, senior communications and PR specialist for the Georgia Dome.
His advice? Take Marta.
“It’s the absolute easiest way to get here. Find a Marta station and let them do the driving,” he said.
The Georgia Dome/GWCC/Philips Arena stop is the first on the blue linefrom the Five Points station.
As Kirksey points out, travel to the concert will take place during rush hour on a weekday and the nearby Atlanta Convention Center at AmericasMart is holding a convention with about 70,000 people.
If you are intent on driving, parking passes for the Dome's blue and yellow lotsare available now for online purchase for $30.
The lots will open at 9 a.m. (those who wish to tailgate can do so if they follow the usual rules that apply during football season).
The Georgia Dome will open doors at 6 p.m. There is no opening act and the concert is expected to start at 8 p.m. At most of their recent shows, Bey and Jay arrived onstage closer to 9 p.m. But it’s Beyonce. She can do whatever she wants, and that just might include starting on time at 8 p.m.
Tickets for the Atlanta concert are long sold out, so beware of secondary market resellers (Ticketmaster and the Georgia Dome are the only official ticket sellers). There is some suite availability for fans with deeper pockets (404-223-8420 for more info) and, as with any concert, there is the remote possibility that some single seats will be released closer to show time.
For those picking up tickets at will call, be aware that the Dome Ticket Office has been moved to an area between gates B and C.
The Falcons’ pre-season starts Aug. 8 with a game against the Miami Dolphins, and all of these changes will remain in effect.
Said Kirksey: “This is our world for the next three years.”
