State Rep. Calvin Hill, R-Canton, 66, died Wednesday after a fight with leukemia.

“The entire House of Representatives is saddened by our loss of Rep. Calvin Hill,” Speaker David Ralston, R-Blue Ridge, said in a statement. “Calvin Hill was one of the most principled public servants in our state. He fought hard for the ideals he believed in and never grew weary of doing what was right.

“We will miss his leadership and the great dignity he brought to our body. I know that every House member joins me in expressing our love and sympathy to Cheryl and all of the Hill family.”

Details on services were not immediately available.

Hill was first elected in 2002 and served on the Appropriations Committee and Banks & Banking Committee, and chaired the Code Revision Committee.

Hill was diagnosed with leukemia this summer. In September, friends began an online push to try and help find him a bone marrow donor, a move doctors had hoped would save his life, the Cherokee Tribune reported.
