A gas leak in a residential area of Alpharetta forced people to stay indoors Monday afternoon, officials said.

The leak, which the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety described as “significant,” was located in the 500 block of Briars Bend. Residents were asked to stay inside their homes and the road was closed to all traffic about 3:45 p.m.

According to Atlanta Gas Light, a 2-inch plastic main line was damaged by a third-party contractor.

“Atlanta Gas Light crews were onsite to safely secure the area and repair the cut line,” company spokeswoman Holly Lovett said. “The safety of our employees and our customers are our No. 1 value.”

Repairs were finished by about 5:15 p.m. and Briars Bend reopened.
