Residents return to South Georgia homes ravaged by tornado

The sad work of reclaiming their lives began this morning for the hundreds of people whose homes were hit by a tornado Sunday.

For the first time since the storm, authorities here plan to allow residents of the Sunrise Acres Mobile Home Park back for short visits to their homes.

There will be escorted visits for them to pick up some possessions and get a sense of the damage. More than 30 of the trailers were wiped out, about a third of the total here. Many others were damaged.

Seven people from the mobile home park died.

The larger community, meanwhile, continued to make great efforts to help. Two shelters are open and donations are steadily coming in.

"I've never seen the outpouring of love and support in any community as I've seen in the last day and a half," said an emotional Buddy Duke, mayor of Adel.

Probate Judge Chase Daughtrey added condolences to the families and loved ones of those who died.

"Dozens of people in this community are shedding tears," he said.
