Authorities are hoping to finally identify a young boy who was found dead in south DeKalb County 16 years ago.
The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children is seeking help from the public to identify the boy who was found in Decatur on Feb. 26, 1999.
The boy, who it’s estimated was 5 to 7 years old at the time, was found in a wooded area behind a small church cemetery on Clifton Springs Road.
Forensic analysis suggests the boy is from an area that includes metro Atlanta, south Georgia and northern Florida.
No cause of death was determined, so the manner of death is also undetermined, said investigator Linda Gochenouer of the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Law enforcement is still actively investigating the case.
But Gochenouer said there have never been any suspects or persons of interest developed.
“We try to present this case as a plea for information aiding identification,” she said. “We are not trying to develop suspects, we are trying to identify a little boy and get him back to his family.”
