A kindergarten student at a Brighton, Colorado, elementary school was suspended when she brought a small toy gun to school Monday.
The clear plastic gun was a bubble-dispensing toy.
KMGH reported that the 5-year-old girl brought the toy to Southeast Elementary School and was suspended for one day.
"I apologized right away and said that I am so sorry she did that," the girl's mother, who did not want to be identified, told KMGH. "I appreciate that they're trying to keep our kids safe, I really do. But there needs to be some common sense. It blows bubbles."
The girl took the bubble gun out before school started during a recess.
The girl's mother, who identified herself as Emma to KDVR, said she would never knowingly allow her daughter to bring such a toy to school.
A spokesman for the school district said the suspension was "consistent with … district policy as well as how Southeast has handled similar situations throughout this school year."
Emma told KDVR her concern is her daughter's school record.
"I don't want her to miss out on class. That's a silly reason not to go to school. What bugs me is this is going to be something they can refer to if we have any issues in the future which I don't foresee, but it's always going to be lingering there in her school file."
Southwest Elementary School issued a statement on the incident:
While we hear and understand the parents of this student being concerned about this discipline in light of the student's age and type of item, this suspension is consistent with our district policy as well as how Southeast has handled similar situations throughout this school year. This has involved similar situations where students have brought items such as Nerf guns to school and also received one-day suspensions. The bringing of weapons, real or facsimile, to our schools by students can not only create a potential safety concern but also cause a distraction for our students in the learning process.
