He was 17 years old when he came up with the formula to instantly stop bleeding. Now at 22, Joe Landolina has his own biotech company in Brooklyn and his invention is starting to be shipped to veterinarians.
It all started in grandfather's lab when Landolina was in high school: a new way to heal wounds that begins with algae that is broken down and added to a gel that can be injected into a site. The gel/algae combination called Vetigel instantly makes a mesh that will stop bleeding then will start healing anything from a cut to a biopsied soft organ like the liver, kidney or spleen, Yahoo Finance reported.
According to the website for the company Suneris, Vetigel will soon start shipping samples to veterinarians, but it is not for sale yet. The company is still seeking approval for use in people.
According to Forces.tv, the gel is being tested for use in the military.
