A video that shows a search dog handler saying items found in Georgia were a positive scent match to missing Tequesta Austin Stephanos and Perry Cohen is not new information to the families of the missing boys, a spokesman told The Palm Beach Post on Thursday.
In a YouTube video posted Monday by The Henry County Report, handler Julie Jones talks about her dog, Quincy, and his ability to match scents for in cases ranging from missing persons to homicides. About 1:45 into the video, Jones said they were called down to Georgia to help match scents with two life jackets and a white boat seat cushion.
“It was a positive that these items did match the boys,” she said.
Family spokesman Vincent McBeth said the information is not new and that it was part of the initial investigation when items washed up near Savannah, Ga., on Aug 4.
WPTV Channel 5 spoke with Dr. Robert Bowie with DEEMI Search and Rescue who said even though the dog was able to match the scent, it's only a preliminary indicator and may not affect the investigation.
On Sunday, the family of the two missing boys called of the search for the two boys who went missing July 24 from Jupiter Inlet. The Coast Guard called off its search that stretched from Daytona Beach to South Carolina, on July 31.
