Skye Brunetti put her 5-year-old-son on the school bus Tuesday morning and was walking her dog.
Moments later, she was killed.
WCBS reported that a woman driving a 2007 white Chrysler lost control of her vehicle, jumping a curb and hitting Brunetti, killing the 25-year-old mother and her dog.
The driver, Barbara Cottone, 50, ultimately hit a utility pole, which was split in two, according to police.
WABC reported that officials believed Brunetti may have had her back to oncoming traffic.
Family and friends brought flowers to the Brunetti family later that day.
"She loved her kid and, like, she would do anything for him," one woman said. "I don't even know how he is going to take it. He's only 5."
Police impounded the vehicle for a safety check.
Officials said Cottone was treated at a nearby hospital for minor injuries. They believe she may have a medical condition that caused her to lose control of the car.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help with funeral costs. It has raised more than $46,000, surpassing its goal.
A viewing for Brunetti is scheduled for Saturday.
