According to The Associated Press, the boy was playing with his brother outside their home in Pitkin County, near Aspen, on Friday when the mountain lion attacked. Their mother heard the boys screaming, ran outside and saw the animal on top of the 5-year-old.
"The boy was completely under the cat," Pitkin County Sheriff's Deputy Michael Buglione told the Aspen Times.
"She was able to pry the cat's jaws open," Pitkin County Sheriff's Deputy Michael Buglione said. "She's a hero."
The boy is in fair condition at Children's Hospital in Denver, the AP reports. His mother was treated for bites and scratches at Aspen Valley Hospital, then released, according to the AP.
