A man in St. Petersburg, Florida, picked the wrong car when he tried to carjack a vehicle with two undercover cops inside on Thursday night, Fox News reports.
Dominique Albert, 27, went up to the vehicle at around 9:45 p.m. with a knife in his hand in an alley off East Harbor Drive South. When he opened the door and realized two detectives were inside, he fled the scene. The detectives were “on a stakeout looking for street crimes,” according to St. Petersburg Police.
"They announced themselves as police officers, drew their weapons, and he fled, dropping his knife in the process," St. Petersburg Police spokesman Mike Puetz told FOX 13 News. "They were startled frankly."
“One: You shouldn’t carjack somebody and two: You should be smarter than this,” George Creighton, a man near the crime scene, told FOX 13 News. “Maybe God was trying to give him a message: This is wrong.”
Police arrested Albert, who has been arrested for theft several times before. Two more knives were found in his possession and he faces charges of carjacking and assaulting a law enforcement officer. His bond is set at $170,000.
