Matt Grodsky doesn’t remember the first time he saw Laura Scheel, but their earliest memories are of each other.
The preschool pair were immediately drawn together as three-year-olds.
"When you like someone, you just kind of stand up and say it," Grodsky told "Today."
Which is what he did in front of a preschool class, which started laughing at the young lover’s vow.
Grodsky and Scheel have since had the last laugh.
The two were separated during elementary and middle school, but reconnected in high school and kept their romance together even while they attended college 1,600 miles apart.
Grodsky, who had already received Scheel’s father’s blessing, asked Scheel for her hand in marriage at the preschool they attended 20 years ago.
“I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, is this happening?” Scheel said. “I saw the ring and was like, ‘This is gorgeous. I’m so happy with it.’”
They wed Dec. 30, 2016. Grodsky’s uncle officiated the wedding.
“For most kids in preschool, it’s about finding your snacks and your sleeping mats,” he said during the ceremony. “But for them, it was about finding their soulmates.”
