Rochester Borough police said a father who was supposed to be babysitting is facing charges after his two children, ages 2 and 4, were found wandering in the street on the town’s main drag earlier this month.
The children made it 2-½ blocks from their house and were playing in the middle of Virginia Avenue for more than 15 minutes before Kim Ferketic noticed them.
“I saw them in the road. I took off running and scooped them up,” Ferketic said.
Ferketic, who was working as a social worker at a retirement center at the time, said the two children were wearing only diapers.
“It's scary. It's a busy area,” said Sgt. Dawn Shane.
Police said the children’s father, James Homzak Jr., was found inside his home sleeping.
According to authorities, Homzak blamed the children for the incident, saying they were supposed to wake him up.
“They would've definitely gotten hit if I wouldn't have been there,” said Ferketic.
Homzak was charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
