An Ohio family whose daughter suddenly passed away recently got an unexpected surprise and say it reminds them that she’s watching over them.

On June 18, Delaney Riley, 10, and her friend Abigail wrote a message, put it in a soda bottle.  and threw it in the ocean while she was in Hilton Head over the summer.

Months later in September, Delaney passed away suddenly. Doctors say the bright, active girl had an undetected heart defect, WJW reports.

Recently, two young girls walking along the beach found the bottle Delaney and her friend cast in the ocean. In the note inside, they found a phone number which belonged to Abigail’s mother. The girls texted her that they found the message.

“We live on Hilton Head and we’d thought you’d like to know we found Delaney Riley’s message in a bottle,” the text read. “We’re two best friends, 9 and 10 years old.”

Delaney’s mother, Chrissy Horning, says it reminded her of Delaney’s special life.

“The letter just showed it. That letter she wrote [in the bottle] showed her excitement about life. It was a whole page long and it was written like the way Delaney writes. She had a long of dreams,” said Chrissy.

Chrissy said the message in the bottle is a reminder that Delaney will never truly be gone.

“She’s with us. She’s our angel watching us. It was a sign that she’s here with us, and a sign that we really needed,” Chrissy said.
