A nurse in New Jersey is accused of re-using a syringe to give flu shots to a group of patients.
The error happened at a flu shot clinic at a pharmaceutical company in September, NBC10 reported.
Otsuka Pharmaceutical said 67 employees received vaccines from the same syringe, but with different needles.
TotalWellness staffed the clinic. The nurse was an independent contractor, CBS News reported.
Reusing the syringe might have exposed patients to inflected blood, officials from the New Jersey Department of Health said in a letter to employees.
Officials said the risk of infection is low, but they are telling the employees to get tested for hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV, NJ.com reported.
All employees have been given blood tests and were told that they will need to be retested in four to six months because some of the viruses can take time to show up in blood tests.
In addition to re-using the syringe, the nurse is accused of giving the patients less than the recommended dose of the flu shot. Employees are being advised to get a second shot, NBC10 reported.
The nurse, whose identity was not released, was licensed by the state's Board of Nursing. A board spokesperson said no disciplinary action has yet been taken and the incident is under investigation.
