Nine years ago, a 22-year-old man was shot and nearly killed while locking up an Arby’s restaurant where he worked. Now, he is graduating from medical school, ready to start a residency alongside the doctor who saved his life.

Kevin Morton Jr. was a student at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. He worked nights at an Arby's, NBC News reports.

One night in 2007, a man shot him. Doctors at St. John Hospital gave him just a 10 percent chance of living through the night.

"Whether we call it intuition, experience or a miracle," Dr. Dharti Sheth-Zelmanski told NBC News. "We put some extra sutures in and the bleeding stopped."

Those extra sutures saved Morton’s life, and he went on to graduate school and to attend medical school.

Now, he’s getting ready to start residency at that same hospital.

“The compassion and drive that Dr. Sheth has shown in trying to save my life. I just wanna pay that forward,” Morton said.
