A Port St. Lucie, Florida, man is facing a first-degree murder charge in the death of his 78-year-old wife, who investigators say he shot.

William Hager, 86, was arrested Monday after St. Lucie County sheriff's deputies were called to his home at 12:50 p.m., TCPalm reports. Investigators said Hager told them his wife, Carolyn Hager, was ill and they couldn't afford medication so he shot her at 7:30 a.m. using a Colt .32-caliber revolver. His wife was found in their bedroom, covered by a blanket, and with a gunshot wound to her head, investigators said.

Deputies said Hager told them he would’ve called authorities earlier, but he contacted his daughters first. He also said he contemplated what to do for several days and Carolyn had mentioned a desire to die, but never asked him to kill her, TCPalm added.
