A black lab was rescued from an ice-coated Great Miami River in Ohio Monday after struggling for over 30 minutes in freezing water.

Firefighters were able to pull Stella, a seven-year-old black lab, safely out of the frigid waters.

Rescuers initially attempted to lasso Stella from a bridge above but later used a specially-designed watercraft.  A firefighter was able to pull her back on solid ice following a brief struggle.

The dog was then taken to a veterinarian in nearby Troy, Ohio. The vet said her temperature was so low, it wouldn’t register on the thermometer. Stella was given food and warmed with heating pads.

The veterinarian's office said a human wouldn’t likely be able to survive the icy conditions for as long as Stella did, and her webbed feet and thick coat helped save her.
