The Marietta Police Department will offer a free Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) class from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday at the department, located at 240 Lemon St.

RAD is a 12-hour, self-defense course for women only of all fitness levels and ages, so mothers are welcome to bring their daughters.

The techniques are designed to be quick and effective in delivering pain to vulnerable locations on the attacker's body.

Participants also will be taught options to escape attacks.
To complete the course, participation in all four classes is required.
So far, more than 900,000 women have attended RAD Basic Physical Defense Program.
Register by emailing Officer Amy Valente at avalente@mariettaga.gov with your name and phone number.

In the police department's May report of the city's apartment crime rates, five of Marietta's 45 apartment complexes were noted for having higher serious crime rates, including rape, murder, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, theft and auto theft.

Those complexes are Marquis Place at 1019 Franklin Road; Natchez Trace on Natchez Trace; Ridgecrest Apartments at 393 Lockheed Ave.; Cinnamon Ridge at 730 Franklin Road; and Campus Edge Apartments at 950 Hudson Road.

However, the Marietta City Council voted 4-3 in June to offer $17.3 million to buy the 28 acres of Marquis Place apartments, which has the highest crime rate of all the city's apartment complexes.

The city is in the process of buying and demolishing apartment complexes on Franklin Road, relocating those residents and inviting high quality businesses to locate there instead.
