The Marietta City Council decided 4-3 Monday against changing the city law that allows four unrelated people to reside in the same house.
Councilman Grif Chalfant had wanted to reduce that number to two to match the Cobb County ordinance.
He also said subdivision houses were becoming multi-family units when they are zoned for single families.
Agreeing with him were Councilmen Johnny Walker and Andy Morris.
Councilwoman Michelle Cooper Kelly and Councilmen Philip Goldstein, Anthony Coleman and Stuart Fleming agreed to keep the city law unchanged.
Kelly said Chalfant’s proposal amounted to “too much control by government.”
“We’ve had difficulty enforcing what we have,” she added.
