A University of Georgia police officer who drowned at Lake Sinclair earlier this week will be remembered Sunday during a “celebration of life service” in Peachtree City.

Officer Tyler Harris, 24, died just after midnight Sunday in Hancock County after going for a swim, according to authorities. Family members found him underwater and were not able to revive him.

The GBI said Tuesday an autopsy was planned at its lab in Augusta. GBI spokesman John Bankhead said results are pending toxicology tests.

The Sunday celebration will be held at Flat Creek Country Club, 100 Flat Creek Road in Peachtree City from 3  to 6 p.m.

Harris graduated from McIntosh High School in Peachtree City and had an associate degree in criminal justice from Gainesville State College.

He joined the UGA police force in February and had just completed the police academy and his field training program at the time of his death, Chief Jimmy Williamson said.

Williamson said the department had high hopes for Harris, who the chief described as “tall and good looking” and always with a smile.

“His training officers say he was doing a really good job when it comes to serving the community and his judgment,” the chief said. “We definitely had high hopes for him, and I definitely think it’s a loss to everybody, not only a loss to his family, but definitely a loss to this community and this department.”

In a funeral notice Wednesday, Harris’ family said the officer “lived life to the fullest.” He enjoyed the beach, water sports, country music, NASCAR, hunting “and all things outdoors”, the family said.

Harris is survived by his parents, Kelly and Sandy Harris of Peachtree City, a brother, Bradley Harris of Peachtree City and a grandmother, Joan Harris of Albany.
