To enforce the city’s new tobacco ban, Powder Springs will receive assistance from the Cobb & Douglas Public Health (CDPH) Department.

This agreement was approved 5-0 on April 20 by the Powder Springs City Council.

CDPH will provide technical assistance and funding to communicate the city’s new tobacco-free policy.

The City Council voted 5-0 on March 16 to ban tobacco use in the indoor and outdoor parks and recreational facilities of Powder Springs.

That tobacco use includes e-cigarettes and smokeless tobacco “at or on any city-owned or operated indoor and/or outdoor recreational facilities, including but not limited to the restrooms, athletic fields, aquatic areas, parks, walking/hiking trails, agency-owned vehicles and spectator and concession areas 24 hours per day, seven days per week.”

For violations, city employees may receive a verbal warning, a written reprimand or termination.

Also, city employees, who use tobacco products, will be offered cessation programs and services.

Visitors will be asked to avoid using tobacco products while on parks/recreation property.

If they refuse, the city’s law enforcement officers will be contacted to escort the person off the premises or to cite the person for trespassing or violating city code.

The public also will not be allowed to use tobacco products in the following areas which are clearly designated by a no-smoking sign:

  • an enclosed elevator which is used by or open to the public.
  • any place on a public transportation vehicle.
  • any area which is used by or open to the public.
  • any city-owned or operated facilities and any building or facility which may, in the future, be owned by the city.
  • any city-sponsored outdoor events and on the City Square.
