You may want to consider leaving the house for your weekend plans a bit earlier than usual.

The Georgia Department of Transportation will close the intersection of Ponce de Leon Avenue and Briarcliff Road for “exploratory underground work for sewer/water line repairs,” officials announced Friday.

The closure will last from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.

The busy intersection sits in the Poncey-Highland neighborhood and is not far from The Carter Center.

Drivers are urged to plan accordingly. GDOT recommends these detours:

Drivers heading Eastbound on Ponce De Leon Avenue:

Turn right onto John Lewis Freedom Parkway and exit right toward The Carter Center. Drivers will then turn right onto Moreland Avenue and exit toward the Moreland Avenue southbound ramp and turn left on DeKalb Avenue. Turn left onto Clifton Road and turn right onto Ponce De Leon Avenue.

Drivers heading Westbound on Ponce De Leon Avenue:

Turn left onto Clifton Road, turn right onto DeKalb Avenue, then right to merge onto Moreland Avenue. Turn left onto John Lewis Freedom Parkway, then turn right onto John Lewis Freedom Parkway and turn left onto Ponce De Leon Avenue.

Drivers heading Southbound on Briarcliff Road:

Turn right toward Johnson Road, continue onto North Highland Avenue, then turn right onto Ponce De Leon Avenue. Drivers will then turn left onto John Lewis Freedom Parkway and take the exit toward The Carter Center. Continue onto John Lewis Freedom Parkway and then turn right onto Moreland Avenue.

Drivers heading Northbound on Moreland Avenue:

Head northbound on Moreland Avenue, turn left onto John Lewis Freedom Parkway then right onto John Lewis Freedom Parkway. Drivers will then turn right onto E. Ponce De Leon Avenue and turn left onto North Highland Avenue. Continue onto Johnson Road and turn left onto North Briarcliff Road.
