Randy Gold of metro Atlanta has received the 2011 Jewish Community Hero of the Year Award from the  Jewish Federations of North America.

Gold was recognized for his work in founding the Atlanta Jewish Gene Screen, an organization that creates awareness and educates rabbis, doctors and Jewish couples about genetic counseling and screening for preventable  disorders  in Jewish families. He will receive a $25,000  grant for Atlanta Jewish Gene Screen.

The Federation Hero of the Year Award was awarded to Joel Marcovitch of Athens for receiving the most online votes for a nominee whose project is directly operated by a federation or national partner agency of The Jewish Federations. Marcovitch  was nominated in support of his work with the University of Georgia Hillel.
