A sign appeal by McDonald’s - that would cost $80,000 - was denied by a 3-2 vote of the Powder Springs City Council on Jan. 6.
In support of McDonald’s were Councilwomen Nancy Farmer and Patricia Wisdom.
In favor of the McDonald’s denial were Councilwoman Doris Dawkins and Councilmen Patrick Bordelon and Henry Lust.
Axis Infrastructure requested the sign appeal on behalf of McDonald’s, 4021 Powder Springs Road.
When this McDonald’s was renovated - both interior and exterior, the city required McDonald’s to spend $60,000 to install a monument sign, replacing one of two pole signs.
Now that McDonald’s wants to modify the front counter, the city is requiring McDonald’s to replace the other pole sign with a monument sign that would cost $80,000, according to Powder Springs Community Development Director Tina Garver.
“His site sits well below the road. There’s extensive vegetation that blocks the view of his business. Lowering his sign will be detrimental to his business,” according to the application appeal from Axis Infrastructure.
“The changes to the front counter will not create an increase in business that justifies investing an additional $80,000 cost,” the appeal added.
Garver said the renovation cost by McDonald’s to the front counter would cost $150,000.
