A Middle Georgia firefighter died Tuesday after he was injured at a fire scene, according to multiple reports.

Darrell Plank, 29, a 10-year veteran of the Macon County department, was hit in the head Saturday by a metal coupling as a fire hose snagged on the truck, the Macon Telegraph reported.

Plank's skull was fractured and he suffered a stroke on the left side of his brain, according to a Facebook page set up by his friends.

He was taken to intensive care at a hospital in Macon after the injury, the Telegraph reported. Firefighters and friends kept a vigil for him there until he died.

Firefighters from Macon County and other agencies planned to escort Plank’s body Wednesday to a funeral home in Montezuma, according to the Facebook page.

GoFundMe page has been set up for Plank's family. He had five children.
