After voting last year to display the motto “In God We Trust” above the county seal in the public meeting room, the Fayette County Board of Commissioners voted 3-2 on Dec. 10 to add the English translation of “E Pluribus Unum” to the display as well.
Commissioner Steve Brown suggested the addition of “Out of Many, One” after claiming that “numerous citizens” contacted him about the idea. A half dozen attendees at the meeting criticized the first motto for being inappropriately faith-based and exclusionary. Commissioners Charles Oddo and David Barlow opposed the measure.
