Gwinnett County police are looking for the owner of a puppy that was found with multiple broken ribs and healing fractures.
The 6-month-old spaniel mix was found at the Columns at Club Drive, a Duluth apartment complex. The dog could not walk when she was first found. The dog’s fractures were in various stages of healing, indicating they had occurred over an extended period of time, police said. The dog was examined by a University of Georgia forensic veterinarian.
Police canvassed the apartment complex and the surrounding neighborhood, but could not find out more information about the dog or her owner. How the dog was injured is currently under investigation.
Because the injuries are in different stages of healing, it is possible that they were caused by abuse, said Gwinnett County Police Department spokeswoman Cpl. Michele Pihera.
“If she was struck by a car (for example), all her injuries would be in the same stage of healing,” Pihera said.
She is now named Mandy and has had surgeries to heal her injuries. She is recovering well and is being housed at the Gwinnett County Detention Center as part of the Gwinnett County Jail Dogs program, in which inmates help train and prepare shelter dogs for adoption.
Anyone with information on Mandy, her owner or how she was injured is asked to contact Gwinnett County Detective J. Maddox at 770-513-5300 or Animal Cruelty Investigator Joey Brooks at 770-513-5700. Anonymous tips can be made via Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477, crimestoppersatlanta.org or by texting the tip to 274637. Crime Stoppers tips may be rewarded with up to $2,000 if they lead to an arrest or indictment.
